Carlos Heras-Palou qualified from the School of Medicine in Zaragoza (Spain) in 1988. Following House Officer and SHO jobs in England he obtained his FRCS in 1993 and completed his training in Orthopaedic Surgery and Trauma in Leicester obtaining his FRCS (Tr & Orth) in the year 2000. He was trained in hand surgery in Leicester, followed by fellowships in Derby and Oxford.
He has hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis (hATTR amyloidosis), a rare and potentially fatal disease which causes sticky amyloid protein to build up in organs and around nerves.
